THE IDEA

The Hands on History Project was an initiative by Compagnia San Michele aimed at improving the knowledge between members through a series of cross-disciplinary training sessions. These internal sessions consisted of practical activities, lectures, inclusivity training and interpretation methodologies.

The target of the project was to empower our members with the right tools to approach the public with effective and inclusive methods.

We would like to go a step further! As Historical interpreters we have been offering our users a tangible way of interacting with history. We believe that we can learn more from history than just dates and names. By contextualising what we do to contemporary times we strive to promote the values of life-longe-learning, active citizenship and sustainability.

This project is cofounder by the European Commission through the Europiean Solidarity Corp Program

  • Our members come from different professions, ages and interests. What binds us as an organization is our interest in history. The project aims to highlight each member’s interest within the period that Compagnia San Michele tackles. Through the 11 months members have participated in and conducted workshops to learn and share their methodologies, findings, and research. These workshops and lectures range from historical, theoretical, and practical in nature.

With this tool, we aim to empower our members to become more confident in what they represent and to inspire them to take up topics that might have not yet been investigated from a historical-interpretation perspective.

  • Providing a high quality historical interpretation and living history expirance was always at the heart of Compagnia San Michele. We aim to look at new ways of approaching our users to enable them to feel more confident exploring history, culture and heritage. Through workshops, public displays, talks and other activities we wish the help people engage with the relevant lessons history can teach us within todays context.

The workshops we will be offering as part of this project will include topics of sustainability on the themes of water conservation, single-use plastics, and fast fashion.

  • Malta has seen many people docking in its harbour. This was no different in the Early Modern period. The island’s Grand Harbour during this time was a hassle and bustle of culture and people from all over the European and the Mediterranean partaking in trade and other maritime activities.

This Multinational event is part of an informal alliance between groups interpreting the Early Modern Period, more specifically the years between 1565 and 1571. As Compagnia San Michele has participated in events organised by other countries we would like to host an event which interprets some of the most eventful years of the island. As we have experienced the wide open spaces other member groups can offer in their home country, we would like to promote a local experience. This is why we will be targeting different heritage sites around the island which are synonymous to some of the greatest events in the Mediterranean contemporary to the period we interpret.

This opportunity is not only for us to promote the heritage of the Island or Malta as a tourist destination but also to offer the public an interactive, high-quality, and researched product to engage with.

More information on this event will be COMING SOON!
