All you need to know

Introduction

Between Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd October 2023, Compagnia San Michele will be hosting reenactors interested in the ca. 1560-1571 period of European and Mediterranean history on the island of Malta, for a three-day programme of activities which will see participants carry out historical interpretations in various locations. These will include fortifications, public and religious buildings in Vittoriosa/Birgu as well as Valletta.

We will welcome participants to the island on Thursday 19th October 2023 to settle down and be logistically prepared to dress up and start the 3-day program the following morning. The event will formally end on the afternoon of Sunday 22nd October 2023.

  • The general theme of the event centers around the diversity and cosmopolitan nature in and around the Grand Harbour area.

The event consists of three sub-themes which are the movement of the Order of St John from Birgu to the new city of Valletta, the old Castellania law courts, and last but not least the Great Siege of 1565.

More information on these themes can be found here

  • The following amenities will be available throughout the event:

    1. Food: Complementary food and drink from the official start to the official end of the event,
i.e. Breakfast on Friday until Lunch on Sunday

    2. Lodging (On 3 nights, from the night of Thursday 19th until the night of Saturday 21st October). Our accommodation will be at one of the halls at Fort St Angelo in Birgu.

    3. Modern toilets: These will be available at the provided accommodation and all sites we will be visiting.

    4. Showers: One shower will be available at Fort St Angelo between 18:00 - 01:00.

    5. Transport: Compagnia San Michele will be offering transport from the airport for those arriving on the 19th of October. Each arriving group will be provided with a contact for the member who will be picking them up on the day.

Transport used to travel between sites mentioned in the program between the 20th and the 22nd will be provided locally.

  • Both male and female interpretations are welcome and encouraged. Male characters will predominantly represent professional soldiery. Female characters will mainly represent local inhabitants and followers. This event aims to entertain a strong standard of authenticity in the clothing worn by participants. The clothing needs to fit within the period of ca. 1560-1571 and adhere to contemporary European styles including Spanish, Italian, French, German and English. If you’ve received this invitation, it means that we hold to high esteem your professional approach to historical clothing and equipment, so we won’t ask for any photos pertaining to your kit, whilst completely trusting that you’re aware of what fits in best with the period and context of this event.

Male characters, travel permitting, are encouraged to bring their own arms and armour. Matchlock firearms are welcome and powder will be provided. We will get in touch with those groups wishing to bring firearms to go over the legal requirements and forms. Participants are kindly asked to supply their own eating implements, and their own basic bedding if they’d like to avail of the lodging offered at the Inquisitor’s Palace.

  • Bedding: We will be offering camp beds for all participants. You will need to bring with you a sleeping bag or blanket and a pillow.

Eating utensils: For one of the days we will be having a Taste History experience. This will also include soup, so it is important that you bring a bowl and spoon with you.

Period correct bag to carry your personal effects. We will be moving quite a lot and its important that you carry anything which you will need along the way.

    Towels and hygiene products

Chargers and power banks. We use the British-standard 3-pin plug
